Summary of jet pump applications in hydropower stations

A jet pump is fluid transport equipment without rotating parts. It has the advantages of simple structure, reliable operation, convenient maintenance, and low cost. In recent years, it has been widely used in large and medium-sized hydropower stations at home and abroad, with good results. Related equipment is also called injection pump, ejector, and so on.

Definition and characteristics:

1. No rotating parts, simple structure
2. Reliable operation and easy maintenance
3. Low cost, suitable for power station auxiliary system applications
4. Can be driven by surplus motive fluid such as high-pressure water in front of the dam or from the volute

Application areas:

1. Technical water supply for hydropower station units
2. Removal of accumulated sediment from collection sumps
3. Series air make-up and water-level maintenance in high-pressure air systems for phase-adjusting dewatering

Unit technical water supply:

One of the important applications of jet pumps in hydropower stations is unit technical water supply. A recent research result—the needle-valve adjustable jet pump—has the advantages of high efficiency and a wide working range, and is suitable for technical water supply systems of hydropower station units with large changes in water head and load.

For power stations with small head changes, fixed jet pumps can be used.

Sump desilting:

In the drainage system, it is recommended to use a jet pump to remove accumulated sediment from collection sumps. Compared with slurry pumps, jet pumps are more effective and can save electrical energy.

Series application in phase-adjusting dewatering:

When a high-pressure air system is used for phase-adjusting dewatering, a jet pump can be connected in series in the high-pressure air system to draw in a certain amount of free air; the jet pump can also replace the blower to maintain the depressed water level in the runner chamber.

This not only obtains the best working parameters for phase-adjusting dewatering, but also saves investment and greatly simplifies the layout of dewatering equipment and the air pipe network.

Selection points:

In engineering selection, a reasonable choice should be made between needle-valve adjustable and fixed jet pumps according to the range of water head and load variation. In high-pressure air systems such as those for phase-adjusting dewatering, the combined benefits of series air make-up and water-level maintenance by jet pumps can be further exploited.
