The principle of aeration

The transfer of oxygen from the air to the water is a gas-liquid two-phase mass transfer process. The mechanism of this process is generally explained by the double-membrane theory.

By understanding the principle of double membrane theory, we know that to improve the mass transfer of oxygen in the air in the water body, we must:

1. Reduce the size of the bubbles. The smaller the bubbles, the greater the specific surface area of gas-liquid contact.
2. Increase the gas-liquid contact time.
3. Increase the stirring intensity. The stronger the mixing, the more severe the turbulence and the greater the gas transfer rate.

The nature and purpose of aeration

In the sewage treatment process, the purpose of aeration is to:

1. Provide oxygen for the oxidative decomposition of organic matter (process object).
2. Create an aerobic environment for the survival and reproduction of aerobic microorganisms.
3. Make full contact with organic matter, microorganisms and oxygen.

Therefore, the essence of the work of the aeration equipment is to transfer the oxygen in the air to the water with efficient oxygenation amount ≥ oxygen demand, thereby achieving: oxygenation amount ≥ oxygen demand.
